Running a business demands attention in a hundred directions at once. Revenue, staff, customers, compliance, growth. Most owners are organised (but busy) when it comes to the business itself.
The personal finances… well they often sit in the background or on the ‘yep, get to “one day” pile…”
Not because they are unimportant. But because there is always something more urgent competing for attention.
Financial planning is rarely about complicated strategies. More often, it begins with stepping back and asking a few straightforward questions to gain clarity – clarity about WHY are we doing all of this?
Here is a simple checklist many business owners find useful.
Have you…
- Defined what “enough” actually looks like for you and your family, and whether the path you’re on today realistically gets you there?
- Stepped back from the business to build personal financial security, rather than assuming the business itself will eventually provide it?
- Used tools like superannuation, investments and tax structures intentionally, or have they simply accumulated over time without a clear strategy?
- Considered what happens if life interrupts the plan – illness, income disruption, economic changes, or needing to step away from work earlier than expected?
- Joined the dots between the key people advising you – accountant, financial adviser and lawyer – so that tax, wealth, risk and succession decisions are working together?
You do not need every answer immediately.
But if several of those questions gave you pause or deep down, you know the answer ‘no…’, it usually means there are areas worth exploring more closely.
Most business owners spend decades building something valuable. The real question is whether the life it was meant to support has been designed with the same care.
