Here’s what’s ahead for your finances and business in 2026

As we step into 2026, there are some important changes and key dates that individuals and SMEs need to keep in mind. Planning ahead now will help you stay compliant and make the most of new opportunities.

What’s changing for you in 2026

1. Payday Super starts 1 July

From 1 July 2026, employers must pay superannuation at the same time as wages, instead of quarterly.

Why it matters:

  • For employees: Your super hits your fund faster, helping your balance grow sooner.
  • For employers: Payroll systems need updating to meet the new rules.

Tip: SMEs should review payroll processes now to avoid compliance headaches later.

2. Superannuation Guarantee (SG) rate

The SG rate remains at 12%, so employers should continue budgeting for this contribution level.

Tip: If you’re an employer, confirm your payroll software is calculating SG correctly. If you’re an employee, check your contributions match your entitlements.

3. Tax concessions for high super balances

From 1 July 2026, new rules apply for individuals with super balances over $3 million:

  • Earnings on amounts above $3 million will be taxed at 30% (instead of 15%).
  • For balances over $10 million, the tax rate will increase further to 40%.

Tip: If you have a large super balance, talk to us about strategies to manage these changes.

4. Income tax relief

From 1 July 2026, the tax rate for incomes between $18,201 and $45,000 drops from 16% to 15%, giving low and middle-income earners a little extra breathing room.

Tip: Consider how this change might help with budgeting or reinvestment in your business.
