SMSF end of financial year reminder: Have you optimised your contributions?

The contribution caps for the 2025 financial year are:

Contribution TypeCap
Concessional (deductible) Contributions Cap (aged up to 65 years)$30,000
Concessional (deductible) Contributions Cap (aged 65 years to 75 years and met the work test)$30,000
Non-Concessional (after-tax) Contributions Cap (aged up to 75 years) *$120,000

*The amount of non-concessional contributions you can make does depend on your total super balance. If your total super balance is in excess of $1.9m you are ineligible to make non-concessional contributions.

Concessional contributions are made up of employer contributions, salary sacrifice and personal deductible contributions. Your cap may be higher if you have an unused carry forward cap from previous years, and your total super balance is under the required threshold.

It is important that all contributions are physically received by the Fund by 30 June in order to be counted towards your contribution cap (and be claimed as a deduction) for this financial year.

Bring forward provisions

Your non-concessional contributions cap can be higher if you are eligible for bring-forward provisions, which allow you to ‘bring forward’ up to an additional two years of your annual cap. This means you can make up to three times the annual cap in a year. Eligibility does depend on your age and your total super balance, so it’s important to get advice prior to making large contributions.
